Recent years have seen the accelerated development of applications employing terahertz radiation. The progress of this technology however, has been impeded by the absence of cheap, compact and convenient sources. The work presented in this thesis contributes towards the realisation of a silicon heterostructure terahertz quantum cascade laser (QCL), representing one effort towards the ultimate goal of achieving lasing in silicon.
